Anal rays 7 to 9, usually 8; dark lateral stripe distinct and narrowing anteriorly, not extending below lateral line posterior to pectoral fin; lateral scales with diamond- shaped pattern; in live specimen red absent from leading rays of pectoral, pelvic, dorsal, and anal fins; top of eye not red in color; pigmentation of dorsal fin uniform in color, base of fin without distinct black, posteriorly directed wedge; caudal fin uniformly colored.

Anal rays 8 to 10, usually 9; dark lateral stripe broad and more diffuse anteriorly; posterior to pectoral fin stripe extending to one scale row below lateral line; diamond-shaped pigmentation pattern on lateral scales poorly defined, best developed ventrally; in live specimens leading rays of pectoral, pelvic, dorsal, and anal fins red; top of eye red; dorsal fin with base darkly pigmented in the shape of a posteriorly directed wedge; caudal fin tricolored, white, red, and gray.
