Undergraduate Research in Mayden's Laboratory
Several students are very active pursing independent research in my laboratory on biodiversity, systematics, ecology, and conservation of freshwater fishes. Students are welcome to gain research experience in these areas using a variety of techniques and are often able to travel to conferences to present their results and are coauthors on peer-reviewed publications. General Interests: I work on the CTOL project which is an international and collaborative effort focused on resolving the phylogenentic relationships of the Cypriniformes fish group. The project involves reconstructing the phylogeny of all the genra of 1000 representative species using molecular (mitochondrial and nuclear) and morphological (myological and osteological) characteristics. I perform DNA extractions and polymerase chain reactions, as well as gel cuts, on the isolated DNA of these specific fish groups. I am currently a Junior at Saint Louis University with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Biology and Music. I will be attending Saint Louis University Medical School in the fall of 2008.

General Interests: A new member of the lab hailing from Appleton Wisconsin, Phil is a fourth year biology major with a minor in art history. Time spent fly-fishing with his dad helped Phil develop an interest in stream fish at a young age, but summer work in Dr. Mayden’s lab has helped Phil to further appreciate stream fish in the cypriniformes group. Phil will be graduating in December of 2006 and attending dental school in the fall of 2007 somewhere in the Midwest.
